As we step into the crisp, fresh start of 2024, we'd like to start to build even deeper relationships with our customers! Get to Know Your Customer Day is coming up, so we'd super appreciate it if you filled out our survey. It only takes about 5 minutes and will help us give you a better experience with our products. Thank you!
It's also time to celebrate Walk Your Dog Month! This annual observance, celebrated during January, is a perfect opportunity to emphasize the importance of regular exercise and outdoor activity for your furry friends. At AAPM, The Wild Bone Company, and Walk About Pet, we're excited to join the movement and encourage dog owners like you to make a commitment to walk your dogs more often, benefiting not only your pets but also strengthening the bond between you and your beloved companions.
Why is Walk Your Dog Month Important?
Regular walks and exercise can help control your dog's weight and limit the chances of them becoming obese. According to a 2017 clinical study conducted by the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, a startling 56% of dogs in the United States were obese, equivalent to over 50 million dogs across the country. The study declared that "The number of pets with clinical obesity continues to increase, resulting in more secondary conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and certain forms of cancer. Pets with obesity also have reduced quality of life and a shorter life expectancy." This alarming statistic emphasizes the urgency of addressing canine obesity. Regular exercise, such as daily walks & games of fetch, are simple yet effective ways to combat this issue.
Going on walks with your dog also helps with socialization. You never know what new sound, smell, animal, or situation will pop up while on a walk. When your dog encounters something new, it's a good time to reinforce what is going on with treats, affection, or play. This will help your dog have a positive association with their new experience. The arrival of Walk Your Dog Month at the beginning of the new year couldn't be more timely. And hey, if you can commit to walking your doggo in the cold of January, the summer should be a breeze! (They may need a cute sweater).
How do I Celebrate Walk Your Dog Month?
Participating in Walk Your Dog Month is not only fun but also incredibly rewarding for you and your dog. Here are some ideas to help you celebrate this wonderful month:
Commit to Daily Walks: Pledge to take your dog for a walk every day in January, regardless of the weather. Consistency is key to maintaining a healthy routine. If it is too cold or there is too much snow, get creative and play some intense tug-of-war or teach your dog a new trick! Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise.
Discover New Routes: Explore different walking paths, parks, and nature trails to keep your dog engaged and excited. New environments can be stimulating and enjoyable for both of you.
Set Goals: Challenge yourself and your dog by setting walking goals, such as increasing the distance you cover or trying one new trail each week. Setting targets like this keeps things interesting.
Socialize: Use dog walks as an opportunity for your furry friend to socialize with other dogs, people, and new experiences. Positive social experiences are essential for your dog's mental and physical well-being.
Document the Journey: Capture memorable moments during your walks and share them on social media. Tag us @walkaboutpet or @thewildboneco and we will repost all photos!
